Luzerne Music Center
Set within the wooded landscape of Lake Luzerne, the Luzerne Music Center project expands and enhances the campus with a new facility designed to support the Center’s longstanding mission of music education, performance, dining, and community.
Phinney Design Group’s design draws inspiration from the natural character of the Adirondacks while establishing a contemporary architectural identity for the Music Center. Warm wood cladding, natural stone, exposed timber columns, and generous roof overhangs create a strong connection to the surrounding forest. Broad, welcoming entry canopies provide sheltered arrival areas and establish a distinctive new presence on campus.
A key component of the project is a new cafeteria and dining facility, creating a central gathering place for students, faculty, staff, and visiting musicians. Designed to accommodate the daily needs of the summer music program, the cafeteria provides a comfortable and inviting environment for meals while also serving as an important social hub where the Music Center community can come together outside of rehearsals and performances.
Expansive glazing brings natural light deep into the building and maintains a visual connection to the wooded campus. The building’s low profile and horizontal rooflines allow it to settle comfortably into its surroundings, while durable, regionally appropriate materials reinforce the character of an Adirondack arts campus.
More than simply a dining facility, the project is envisioned as a new center for campus life—a welcoming place where young musicians can dine, gather, build friendships, and connect within an environment shaped by music and the natural beauty of the Adirondacks.
