Clay Island house, originally built in the early 1900s, embodies the charm and craftsmanship of its era with traditional architectural elements such as wood framing, gabled roofs, and expansive porches that embraced the natural surroundings. Large windows were strategically placed to maximize natural light and offer stunning views of the lake, creating a harmonious connection between the indoors and the picturesque outdoor setting. In the early 1970s, the house underwent its first significant renovation, focusing on expanding living spaces and introducing modern conveniences of the time. The renovation included the addition of contemporary materials and design elements, although some of the updates were not in keeping with the house’s original architectural style. Despite these changes, the house retained its core structural integrity and connection to the lake.
Our recent renovation aimed to honor the original early 1900s architecture while enhancing and refining the 1970s updates. Key improvements included a state-of-the-art kitchen with modern (non fossil fuel) appliances and a sleek design that complements the historic character of the house. The bathrooms were also updated with contemporary fixtures and finishes, providing comfort and style without compromising the home’s traditional aesthetic. Recognizing the importance of the house’s lakeside setting, we enhanced the views and physical connections to the lake by adding outdoor spaces, including a once enclosed porch, to blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living, allowing residents to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
To meet the standards set by the Lake George Park Commission, we installed a modern waste water system that ensures environmental compliance and supports the preservation of the lake’s pristine condition. Throughout the renovation process, careful consideration was given to balancing the new and old elements, as well as the integration of natural surroundings and lake views. We preserved key historical features while introducing modern amenities and sustainable practices, creating a harmonious blend of past and present. The island house now stands as a testament to thoughtful renovation, respecting its early 1900s origins while incorporating modern conveniences and environmental standards, resulting in a beautiful, functional home that offers a seamless connection to the natural beauty of Lake George and the Adirondacks.
