Phinney Design Group was tasked with expanding Classical Concepts Salon and Spa by outfitting an adjacent existing space, and equipping their conversion from product-based clientele into service-based clientele by offering massage, styling, manicures, and pedicures for the first time. Upon entering the retail store, curving walls, program-responsive floor transitions, and path-style lighting lead customers into the salon, where circular forms pivot them to various services. To negotiate the conjoined spaces, a curved ramp surface connects the adjacent floor plates, and becomes an organizing scheme for floor and ceiling surfaces. The winding floor patterns, soothing colors, and use of various natural woods and tile provide an unexpected, ecologically-friendly, and calming experience.

Wood, stone, tile, and low- or no-volatile organic compound (VOC) paint are the palette for unique curved custom surfaces and fittings deployed throughout Classical Concepts. The spa has well exceeded the owners’ expectations, and the design has created a vibrant and popular destination on Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs. The retail and service-focused business has expanded its footprint with a high-quality interior environment reflecting its commitment to ecological responsibility and awareness.
