Phinney Design Group Recieves AIA Eastern New York Citation Award for Amsure Adirondack Trust Renovation

Phinney Design Group is proud to announce that the firm’s renovation of the Amsure Adirondack Trust Headquarters has received a Citation Award in the Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse category at the 2026 AIA Eastern New York Design Awards.

Presented annually by the American Institute of Architects Eastern New York Chapter, the Design Awards recognize projects that demonstrate excellence in design, innovation, and the positive impact architecture has on communities throughout the region.

Located in the heart of downtown Saratoga Springs, the Amsure Adirondack Trust Headquarters renovation transformed a historic building into a modern, collaborative workplace while preserving the architectural character that has long contributed to the city’s streetscape. The project carefully balanced restoration with contemporary functionality, creating an environment that supports today’s workforce while honoring the building’s rich history.

The design focused on revitalizing underutilized interior spaces, improving accessibility, modernizing building systems, and introducing flexible work environments that foster collaboration. Original architectural features were thoughtfully preserved and restored wherever possible, allowing the building’s historic craftsmanship to remain a defining element of the renovated headquarters. The result is a workplace that reflects both Amsure’s commitment to its employees and clients and the continued investment in preserving Saratoga Springs’ architectural heritage.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition from AIA Eastern New York,” said Brennan Drake, AIA, Principal of Phinney Design Group. “Adaptive reuse projects require a thoughtful balance between respecting the past and designing for the future. We are grateful to Amsure for entrusting us with the opportunity to reimagine this historic building while preserving the character that makes it so special.”

Historic preservation and adaptive reuse have long been central to Phinney Design Group’s practice. The firm believes that revitalizing existing buildings not only preserves the stories and character of a community but also represents one of the most sustainable approaches to development by extending the life of existing structures and reducing the environmental impacts associated with new construction.

Phinney Design Group extends its sincere appreciation to the American Institute of Architects Eastern New York Chapter and the Design Awards jury for this recognition. The firm is also grateful to Amsure, the project team, consultants, contractors, and craftspeople whose collaboration and dedication made this award-winning project possible.

This honor reflects Phinney Design Group’s ongoing commitment to creating thoughtful, sustainable, and community-focused architecture that respects the past while building for the future.
